First attempt

Ancient history: I was invited to an 'Ancient World' costume party and I decided to do something a bit more ambitious than throwing on an old bedsheet.

I got some faux fur and some sofa-cushion foam from the local market, and spent a weekend hand-stitching a pair of furry trousers. It took so long that to my regret I had to rush the hooves, resorting to a pair of spats made of kitchen flooring vinyl sheet. Observant viewers will note that the cloven hooves were faked entirely, using black duct tape.

I found the horns in a joke shop. I glued offcuts of my own hair on to the headband so that only the horns were visible. I painted over the appalling red plastic with cream-coloured acrylic paint .

Basic body shape.
I drew around a photograph of myself on tiptoe. Obviously I'd need some shoes with heels on the costume itself.

The padding.
Fundamentally, each leg needs a triangle of foam in front of the thigh to suggest a true knee somewhat further forward and higher than a human knee. It also needs a smaller triangle of foam behind the calf to suggest the hock joint: the backward knee of a digitigrade hind leg. And the hooves were vinyl spats to be worn over a pair of old trainers with wooden wedges glued to the soles to provide heels.

The surfacing. Once covered with fur, this was the effect I was hoping for.

The finished product. It saw an outing at two 'Ancient World' parties, plus a 'Mythology' party where I was instructed by my host not to show up as anything other than Pan.

I also made one appearance in some LARP (Live-Action Role-Playing), where I played an NPC (non-player character, a monster with a talking part and a back story) called 'Kevin the Satyr.'
